WASHINGTON: The United States has seized a North Korean cargo ship, alleging sanctions violations by the country.
The justice department said the ship was used to transport coal, North Korea’s largest export but subject to a UN export ban.
The US and the United Nations have said that North Korea has used illicit sales of its coal to fund the country’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles program.
It is the first time the US has seized a North Korean ship for breaching sanctions and comes amid worsening relations between the two.
