WASHINGTON: Over 500,000 American voters have signed a petition that demands the Electoral College to elect Hillary Clinton as President instead of President-elect Donald Trump.
The petition was launched by Change.org on Wednesday calls the Electoral College to “ignore their states’ workers and cast their ballots for the losing Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Introduced in 1804 the Electoral College comprises 538 electors. The number of each US States electors is decided by members of Congress from there which in turn depends on the population of that state. This means that when Americans vote they actually do not vore directly for the president but for the electors.
Trump bagged 279 Electoral votes- nine above the 270 required to win the presidential election 2016- while Hillary Clinton managed to acquire 228 electoral votes.
The mover of the petition Changed.org, which had received over 500,000 signatures till yesterday afternoon, said that Clinton supporters would be happy to pay any fees accrued by those who choose to be faithless electors.
