Will Muhammad Amir Play His First World Cup?

KARACHI: Fast bowler Amir, one of Pakistan’s brightest prospects burst into the cricketing scene in 2007/08 made a good start to his ODI career as well and possessed a solid technique with the bat lower down the order.

In 2009, Amir impressed on the domestic circuit with his pace and ability to swing the ball both ways, when he played for National Bank of Pakistan.

In the ODI against New Zealand at Abu Dhabi, he created history when he achieved the then highest score for a No.10 batsman in an ODI i.e. 73.In his debut season he picked up a total of 55 wickets and that earned him a call-up into the Pakistan national side for the World Twenty20 in 2009. He announced his arrival, bowling with discipline, pace and accuracy.

Amir played a crucial role in Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign where he held his nerve to bowl several last overs to give Pakistan crucial wins.

He carried his good form into the ODIs picking up a career-best 4/28 against Sri Lanka and then went on to bowl brilliantly in the Champions Trophy. He had an insipid start to his Test career as he picked up only six wickets in the three Tests against Sri Lanka. However, on the tours to Australia and England, he excelled.

Against Australia at the MCG, he picked up his first five-wicket haul while his haul of 5/52 against England at the Oval in 2010 gave Pakistan victory after nine years in England.

He etched his name on the Lords Honours Board when he picked up 6/84 in the fourth Test, but it was the beginning of a painful period in Amir’s life. Mohammad Amir has missed out on Pakistan’s 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup squad on Thursday.

The pacer, who famously starred in the Champions Trophy final against India two years ago, paid the price of his poor form in the past two years (just 5 wickets in last 14 ODIs).

While Amir has not been named in the World Cup squad, he is one of two additional players.
