Uttarakhand (February 20, 2018): A 26-year-old woman from Dhampur in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district, who posed as a man and married two women from Uttarakhand’s Nainital district, has now been arrested for allegedly torturing one of them for dowry.
Sweety Sen created a fake Facebook profile under the name Krishna Sen in 2013 and subsequently posted her photographs in a man’s attire. She used the account to get in touch with women.
He added that in 2014, Sen and her family members travelled to Kathgodam in Uttarakhand to meet a 22-year-old woman he got to know on Facebook. “Sen had convinced her that she was a man,” Khanduri said.
The two married the same year and started living in a rented house in Nainital district’s Haldwani town, but Sen soon started assaulting the woman for dowry, police said.In 2016, Sen married a 20-year-old woman from Nainital district’s Kaladhungi area and moved to Hardwar with her, police said.
In October 2017, Sen’s first wife lodged a complaint against Sen in Kathgodam police station under charges of dowry and domestic violence. She alleged that Sen had taken Rs 8.5 lakh from her family, saying that she needed the money for a factory she owned in Hardwar, police said.
Sen, who was at large, was traced by Kathgodam police and arrested on Wednesday. During questioning, she revealed that she was a woman.
SHO, Kathgodam police station, B L Vishwakarma, said, “We had arrested Sen for dowry and domestic violence. We had no clue that Sen was a woman. During questioning, Sen said she was a woman. We got her medical examination done (on Wednesday evening) and it was established that she was a woman.”
Sen was sent to Haldwani jail on Wednesday evening. Vishwakarma said they are yet to approach her parents, who, he said, had visited the families of both the women Sen married and also attended and organised the weddings.
