The approval by the 28 member states follows an overwhelming vote in the European Parliament last week to ban single-use plastic items such as straws, cutlery, cotton buds and balloon sticks.

Work will begin next week to draft detailed legislation with a view to agreeing on a text in December and having it enter into law in 2021.Minister for Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton has welcomed an overwhelming vote in the European Parliament to introduce a ban on single-use plastics.

A spokesman said the Minister was “fully supportive of the EU Commission’s proposal for a directive to manage with single-use plastic waste, and will work with environment ministers across Europe to see these proposals enacted into law”.
