SHC Reserves Judgment in K-Electric Load Shedding Case

Karachi (May 29, 2017): Sindh High Court reserved a judgment in a petition pertaining to massive power load shedding by K-Electric.

At the start of the hearing today the counsel of the petitioner Faisal Siddiqui continued with his arguments from the previous hearing on May 24. K-electric is bound to supply power to all consumers without discrimination but it metes out collective punishment for theft of one by resorting to load shedding . In addition, K-Electric acts as if it is not answerable to anyone because NEPRA had ordered it to refrain form unannunced load shedding but it did not even respond to showcause issued to it over load shedding.

K-Electric is indulging in unfair load shedding, only the power connection of a defaulter should be cut instead of meting out discriminatory collective punishment, Faisal argued. Consumers should be supplied power under the Naional Power Policy 2016 and ordered be issued to K-Electric as per the NEPRA laws pertaining to load shedding.

When the counsel of PEMRA that it would take action if any complaint is received and that it would also take action if it is informed about the area the court said that does that mean it would not take any action itself. The court also asked NEPRA why it does not monitor the situaton itself?

Addressing NEPRA’s counsel Justice Irfan Saadat Khan said that had the NEPRA been fulfilling its responsibilities people would have not be approaching the court with such petitions.

After hearing both sides of the argument the court reserved the judgment which will be announced later today.
