Failure to Control Inflation: Iranian Parliament Dismisses Finance Minister

TEHRAN: Due to inflation and the devaluation of the Iranian rial, the Iranian Parliament has voted to remove Finance Minister Abdolnasser Hemmati from his position following impeachment proceedings.

According to Iranian media, 182 out of 273 members of the Iranian Parliament voted against Finance Minister Abdolnasser Hemmati.

Hemmati, the Iranian Minister of Finance and Economics, was part of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s cabinet formed eight months ago.

According to foreign news agencies, the price of one US dollar in the black market today is 920,000 Iranian rials, whereas in mid-2024, it was less than 600,000 rials.

The news agency reports that earlier, President Masoud Pezeshkian had defended Abdolnasser Hemmati, telling lawmakers, “We are in a complete economic war with the enemy; we need to adopt a wartime strategy.” He further added that the country’s economic problems could not be blamed on just one person.
