Faisal Mumtaz Rathore becomes 16th AJK prime minister

MUZAFARABAD: Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been elected as the 16th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir following the success of a no-confidence motion against Chaudhry Anwarul Haq on Monday.

The opposition achieved a decisive victory, losing only two votes during the process.

The no-confidence motion was presented during an Azad Kashmir Assembly session chaired by Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar. It was submitted by Sardar Javed Ayub, Chaudhry Qasim Majeed, along with other members, who also recommended Faisal Mumtaz Rathore for the position of Leader of the House.

For the motion to pass, a minimum of 27 votes was required. During the session, 36 members voted in favor of Rathore, while only two votes were cast against him. Anwarul Haq, who previously assumed office in April 2023 with 48 votes, chose to contest the motion instead of resigning.

This development marks Faisal Mumtaz Rathore as the 16th Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir and the fourth to serve under the current assembly.
