ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has criticised the government over the country’s deteriorating law-and-order and economic situation, saying its writ was absent in two provinces.
Speaking at a press conference, the JUI-F chief claimed that Sindh was facing rising street crime and described the situation there as one in which criminals were operating freely.
He also alleged that banks were being robbed in Balochistan and questioned the distribution of financial resources outside the province.
“Inflation is increasing rapidly. Where should the people go to seek relief?” Fazlur Rehman asked, while expressing concern over the growing burden of debt on the country.
He also claimed that JUI-F Senator Shukur Khan was stopped at an airport a day earlier and prevented from travelling to China. According to Fazlur Rehman, ministers in his province had also faced restrictions while travelling on roads.
The JUI-F leader criticised the government for imposing restrictions in the capital following announcements of protests by political parties.
He said the country’s pressing issues should be discussed on the floor of Parliament rather than being ignored by those in power.
Fazlur Rehman called for an in-camera session of Parliament, saying that merely holding a closed-door meeting of parliamentary leaders would not be sufficient to address the situation.
He said the purpose of a parliamentary in-camera session should be to brief the nation on the developments taking place in the country.
The JUI-F chief also blamed the government’s conduct for the worsening situation and called on the authorities to take effective measures to restore peace.
Referring to the recently signed agreement with Saudi Arabia, Fazlur Rehman said the arrangement should be taken forward. He added that Egypt and Iran should also have been made part of the agreement.
