Federal govt to consider weekly One-Day lockdown amid fuel crisis

ISLAMABAD: The federal government is set to convene a high-level meeting on Wednesday to finalise plans for a one-day nationwide lockdown each week, aimed at conserving fuel amid the ongoing Middle East conflict and disruptions in oil supply.

Sources indicate that the proposal, inspired by measures taken during the coronavirus pandemic, would see a complete halt of commercial and public activities for one day weekly to curb fuel consumption. Authorities are also reviewing the possibility of reducing business hours across the country as a complementary step.

The plan has already been discussed with political leaders, including the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Sindh government, to ensure coordination and consensus before implementation. Federal ministers have briefed provincial authorities on potential fuel shortages, rising prices, and the economic implications of the proposed measures.

A meeting held at Bhutto House saw Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik discuss the evolving energy situation with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari chaired a session reviewing economic challenges, fuel sector developments, and public relief measures. He stressed that any policy response must prioritise easing the burden of rising fuel costs on ordinary citizens.

The upcoming meeting is expected to finalise the government’s approach to managing the energy crisis, balancing conservation efforts with public and economic considerations.
