Firebrand leader ask supporters to get ready for another round of anti-govt campaign

ISLAMABAD: JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazrul Rehman has urged its supporters to get ready for protest against the government.

Amid escalating tensions over the stalled madrassa registration bill, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) leader has called on its supporters to prepare for protests against the government, accusing the Centre of backtracking on commitments related to the 26th Amendment.

“We believe in reconciliation, but the government is pushing us toward resistance,” JUI-F Punjab spokesperson stated.

The religion-political party’s warning came shortly after President Asif Ali Zardari voiced concerns that if the madrassa bill becomes law, seminaries will be registered under the Societies Act, potentially triggering sanctions under the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), and other international frameworks.

Earlier, a spokesperson for the Maulana Fazlur Rehman-led party alleged that the legislation was being deliberately delayed to placate “international powers.”

Amid escalating tensions over the stalled madrassa registration bill, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Punjab has called on its supporters to prepare for protests against the government, accusing the Centre of backtracking on commitments related to the 26th Amendment.

Speaking at an event at Madrassa Jamia Usmania in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on December 7, the party’s chief set December 8 as the deadline for the government to approve the seminary registration bill. However, just hours before the deadline expired, Fazl extended the deadline to December 17, intensifying pressure on the government.

The contentious madrassa registration bill, already passed by both houses of parliament, remains a major point of conflict between the JUI-F and the government. Its enactment was part of a broader agreement between the two sides tied to support for the 26th Amendment, according to Fazl.
