ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) marked a historic breakthrough on Thursday by successfully performing Islamabad’s first robotic adrenalectomy surgery, ushering in a new chapter in surgical advancement for the nation.

This innovative procedure utilized the cutting-edge “Toumai” surgical robot, an advanced system developed in China, highlighting the integration of global technology in local healthcare practices.

The achievement was part of a Robotic Surgery Master Class organized at PIMS, led by Prof. Dr. Atif Inam Shami, Head of the Department of General Surgery.

The surgery team comprised international robotic experts Prof. Mateen Shareef and Dr. Javed Burki from the United Kingdom, along with senior PIMS surgeons Prof. Dr. Shamim Khan, Dr. Burhan ul Haq, and Dr. Khalid Saeed.

Together, the team successfully carried out the intricate procedure on a female patient, showcasing the potential of robotic-assisted surgeries in transforming healthcare services in Pakistan.

Prof. Mateen Shareef, Director of Robotic Surgery, described this milestone as a significant achievement for Islamabad and the country, emphasizing efforts to make robotic surgery widely accessible nationwide.

Highlighting its advantages, he noted government support for such initiatives, which aim to ensure faster recovery times and reduced pain for patients.

PIMS Executive Director Prof. Dr. Rana Imran Sikandar praised the accomplishment as a landmark in Pakistan’s medical history.

“This landmark event reflects our commitment to advancing patient care through cutting-edge technology and global collaboration. “PIMS will continue to serve as a hub for innovation and professional training in the region,” he stated.

He said, “For the first time in PIMS’ history, a robotic surgery has been successfully performed. Complex operations that were technically challenging can now be done with greater safety and accuracy.”
