First session of indirect Hamas-Israel ceasefire talks ends without progress

Doha: The opening round of indirect ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel in Doha ended inconclusively, according to two Palestinian sources familiar with the negotiations.

The sources said the Israeli delegation lacked the authority needed to reach any agreement with Hamas.

The discussions, which resumed on Sunday in Qatar, come ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s third visit to the White House since President Donald Trump’s return to office nearly six months ago.

“After the first session of indirect negotiations in Doha, the Israeli delegation has no real powers and is not sufficiently authorised to reach an agreement with Hamas,” the sources told Reuters.

Before departing for Washington, Netanyahu stated that Israeli negotiators have clear instructions to pursue a ceasefire deal, but only under conditions acceptable to Israel.
