First stage of Karachi Safe city Initiative near completion

KARACHI: Inspector General (IG) Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, has called for the unification of Police 15, Shaheen Force, Highway Patrol, and additional units under the Karachi Safe City Project.

During a meeting held at the Central Police Office in Karachi, the IG discussed key issues related to the Safe City initiative, including E-Challan systems and Police Emergency Response mechanisms.

The Director General (DG) of the Safe City Authority provided an update, revealing that 891 surveillance cameras have been deployed across Karachi as part of the first phase of the project. He noted that this initial phase is now nearing its final stages of completion.

The DG also announced plans to launch the second phase of the project within the current year, emphasizing that cameras are being installed on major roads and thoroughfares throughout the city.

The IG Sindh directed the deployment of Electronic Video Recorders (EVRs) at critical points around the city. He further instructed that alerts generated by the system should be accessible to all relevant field units. Additionally, he urged for the extension of the Safe City Project’s facilities to other cities within the province.

The meeting was attended by DG Safe City Authority, officials from NRTC— a collaboration between Sindh Police and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation—, DIGs, and other key officers.

NRTC’s involvement signifies the partnership aimed at developing Karachi’s comprehensive Smart Safe City infrastructure.
