Florida (February 15, 2018): At least one person is killed and 20 others reportedly injured in a shooting at a Florida high school.
The attack began at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, northwest of Fort Lauderdale, just before 3pm on Wednesday afternoon, local time.A shooter opened fire at a Florida high school on Wednesday, killing a person and sending hundreds of students fleeing into the streets before being taken into custody by law enforcement, authorities said.
Shortly before students were to be dismissed for the day, the sound of gunfire ripped through the air, Broward County school officials said on Twitter, adding that multiple people had been injured in the incident.The suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
Multiple people died, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida said. “There are a number of fatalities,” Nelson said, citing a conversation with the superintendent of schools
The school, which has around 3,000 students, was placed on a “code red” lockdown and television footage later showed dozens of people running and walking away from the school.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland — about 72 kilometres (45 miles) north of Miami — had been placed on a “code red” lockdown but had no information on victims, a spokeswoman for the county sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff urged the people to avoid the area of Stoneman Douglas High School.

Students hid in classrooms until they were rescued by police in tactical gear, friends and family members said.
