KARACHI : The Sindh government has increased flour prices just before the start of holy month of Ramadan, intensifying the financial burden on citizens already struggling with surging inflation.
As per official notifications, the retail price of flour has been raised by Rs 8 per kilogram, setting the new rate at Rs 107 per kg. Similarly, a 10-kg bag of flour will now cost Rs 1,070.
The announcement was formally made by the Karachi Commissioner, with the new rates put into immediate effect.
The notification also specifies that the ex-mill price of flour is fixed at Rs 104 per kg, bringing the price of a 10-kg ex-mill bag to Rs 1,040. This marks an overall increase of Rs 80 for a 10-kg bag.
Back in December 2025, the official price of flour was set at Rs 99 per kg. However, the authorities have been unable to enforce the availability of flour at government-mandated rates in Karachi.
Consumers note that flour is rarely found at the official prices in retail markets. Instead, many shopkeepers are selling it at Rs 125 per kg, with a 10-kg bag priced at Rs 1,250. In contrast, chaki ground flour is being sold for as high as Rs 140 per kg in various areas of the city.
The escalating cost of flour has rendered basic staples like roti increasingly unaffordable for many impoverished households across Pakistan.
This latest price hike in the lead-up to Ramadan has triggered widespread public concern, as flour remains an essential component of daily meals for families throughout Sindh.
