Foreign Funding Case:PTI fails to submit Party Accounts details to ECP

Islamabad (May 08, 2017):  Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) failed to submit details of party accounts in Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the foreign funding case being heard by the Commission against the party today.A five-member bench of ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (redt) Sardar Raza heard the foreign funding case against PTI.

The party failed to submit the details of party’s accounts in the ECP despite being on notice.  PTI counsel submitted before the bench that they had not yet received the detailed order of the ECP. He added that during that week they remained busy in Supreme Court in another case filed by PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi.

He pleaded the commission to give time to file details of the party accounts.  Upon this CEC remarked that in the order issued on April 1, 2015, the ECP had sought details of party funds and accounts. He added that the matter was pending in ECP for years. Justice Raza asked the PTI counsel whether the ECP should shun to discharge their duties.

A member of ECP, Irshad Qaiser, said that despite a similar case being pending in SC, the PTI required to submit reply in ECP.

The ECP while granting further time to PTI to submit details of party funding and accounts adjourned further hearing of the case till May 30, 2017.

It is to be mentioned here that during last hearing the ECP had rejected PTI stance regarding jurisdiction of the Commission and ruled that it has jurisdiction to hear the foreign funding case against Pakistan Tehrek-e-Insaf (PTI).

PTI had challenged the jurisdiction of ECP, saying that it has no authority and jurisdiction to hear the case.  The ECP ruled that it had full authority to hear the case.

During the course of hearing, Imran Khan’s counsel Faisal Chaudhry, while advanci17-0ng arguments had submitted that the contempt case should be heard separately. Upon this, the CEC had asked the PTI counsel to submit separate application.

The case has been filed by a founding member of PTI Akbar S Baber, saying that PTI received funding from foreign companies and individual which was illegal as per Political Parties Act.
