Former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi hospitalised after cardiac complications

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was hospitalised after experiencing chest pain and later underwent a heart procedure during which doctors inserted two stents to treat arterial blockages.

Hospital sources said Abbasi’s condition is now stable and he remains under observation of senior cardiologists. His family confirmed that doctors have advised him to rest completely and refrain from any strenuous activities for now.

According to his close associate and former finance minister Miftah Ismail, Abbasi’s recovery is progressing well. In a post on X, Ismail wrote, “Alhamdulillah, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi sahib’s health is improving and he is resting comfortably. We pray for his full and speedy recovery and thank all friends who have expressed concern.”

Abbasi, who served as Pakistan’s 18th prime minister from August 2017 to May 2018 following the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif, parted ways with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in early 2023. Later that year, he launched his own political party.
