WEB DESK: Rescue teams recovered the bodies of four climbers on Friday after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, leaving a group of 10 mountaineers missing a day earlier.
Search efforts are continuing in a remote and hazardous section of the 8,051-metre peak to locate the remaining six climbers, according to officials at the Broad Peak base camp.
Among those still missing is renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, who famously completed all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks in record time.
The missing expedition members include five Nepali climbers led by Purja, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, Omani mountaineer Nadhira, American climber Mallory Geis, Chinese climber Mr Wang, and another foreign climber.
Authorities believe the team was caught in a powerful avalanche around midday on Thursday while climbing Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain.
