Gen Nicholson Statement ‘Unnecessary, Unacceptable’: FO

Islamabad (August 31, 2017): Pakistan on Thursday termed the recent statements of Commander of US Forces and NATO in Afghanistan General John Nicholson as ‘unnecessary and unacceptable’.

Foreign Office Spokesman Nafees Zakaria in his weekly press briefing said that Pakistan wanted to sort out issues with US through dialogue. However, there is not high level contacts between the two countries following relations between the two countries dipped to lowest ebb after US President allegations against Pakistan in his speech to unveil his administration new policy for Afgahistan and South Asia.

He added that Pakistan foreign policy faced many challenges, saying that at present it is better to ignore the alleged letter of Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit.He said addressed several issues pertaining to the region and Pakistan’s foreign relations. A conference of envoys under Prime Minsiter Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will be held from Sep 5-7, he informed.

Afghanistan’s war cannot be fought in Pakistan, said the spokesman, adding that Pakistan condemns terrorism incidents in its neighbouring country.

The FO spokesman said that in the occupied Kashmir, Indian forces were carrying out human rights violation.

Pakistan is concerned about the Indian forces taking under custody Hurriyat leaders, Zakaria said.The FO spokesman also expressed concern over hurricane ‘Harvey’ which recently hit Texas and Houston in the US.

He said that Pakistan Consul General is actively involved in relief and rescue activities in the affected areas. Proud of the Pakistani community which is actively participating in relief activities, said Zakaria.Gen John W. Nicholson, the top United States commander in Afghanistan, had recently claimed Saturday that the US was aware of Afghan Taliban leadership’s presence in Peshawar and Quetta, adding that the military would continue to put pressure on Taliban sanctuaries inside and outside Afghanistan.

According to Gen Nicolson, the matter of the alleged sanctuaries for terrorists was being addressed “in private” by the governments of US and Pakistan.
