General Elections to be held on Feb 8 attorney general apprises SC

Islamabad: The general elections will be held on February 8 of next year as President and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) have agreed on a date .

Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan apprised the Supreme Court of Pakistan about the consensus between President and the ECP.

The Attorney General said that a minutes of meeting between President Dr Arif Alvi and the ECP officials will be presented in the court in a some time.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa remarked that okay we we will take up the issue in the last.

We will hear the routine case and then in last we will hear the election case.

Three member bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Amin-Uddin-Khan heard the holding of the elections in the country within 90 days today.

Yesterday on the SC ordered the ECP counsel to set meeting with President Dr. Arif Alvi on Thursday immediately.

The top court also directed the attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Uman Awan to act as legal assistant in the meetings.

Following the court orders Preisdent and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan had met and later they agreed on the date of general elections on February 8, 2024

Under the leadership of Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, members of the Election Commission met the President of Pakistan at the President’s House. In the meeting, it was unanimously decided that the election will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024. The President’s House also issued a declaration in this regard.

Thursday hearing of election case

Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) Thursday said that the announcement of a final date of holding of the general elections will be from the top court.

The SC bench headed by Chief Justice Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Ameen Uddin Khan heard the case of the holding of general elections in the country within 90 days.

This was the second hearing the three-member bench was holding on the petitions.

The SC has issued an order of the today’s hearing in which the top court directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold consultaions with President Dr Arif Alvi immediately while the attorney general of Pakistan will be on board in this matter.

He also ordered that to arrange a meet up between the ECP officials and President on tea for holding of the general elections in the country.

Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa ordered the ECP to lift the phone dial number of the President military secretary to arrange meeting today.

The court further instructed the attorney general of Pakistan to act as legal assistant in the meeting.

After the meeting the parties will prepare document regarding their decisions and dully sign the document so no one can be withdrawn from their point of view and it will be submitted to the court.

The CJ Qazi Faez Isa categorically said that no any other hearing will be heard after the announcement of date of general elections by the court.

The CJ said that all the political parties go to the masses for general elections besides bitterness adding that the masses will elect the party who has a better manifesto.

He said that the SC wanted holding of elections with out going into any discussion adding that we don’t want to engulf in any technical aspects.

The SC order said that the ECP apprised that the delimitation process will end till November 30. According to the ECP after it an election schedule can be released.

The ECP further apprised that all the preparation of the general elections will be completed till January 29.

The ECP has suggested to chose Sunday for holding of the elections as more and more people can participate and cast their votes.

Earlier, the ECP counsel in the case apprised the court date of holding of general elections in the country. As per the ECP , the general elections will be held in the country on February 11.

The ECP apprised the date to the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) while hearing the case of holding of general elections with in 90 days in the country.

Responding on the ECP date, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa ordered the ECP to hold consultations on the date with President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi today.

A counsel of the ECP Sajeel Swati apprised the SC the date of the holding of the elections in the country. He apprised further that delimitation process will end till November 30.

Justice Athar Minallah said that President has powers to announce the election date in the country as per the constitution.

The ECP counsel informed the SC that all the preparations including the delimitation process will complete till January 29.
