Girl’s stomach lock extracted without surgery at Lyari

KARACHI: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Lyari General Hospital successfully extracted a lock from the stomach of a 23-year-old girl with intellectual disabilities, using a minimally invasive technique instead of traditional open surgery, on Monday.

The patient, a resident of Malir Khokhrapar, had accidentally ingested the lock, which led to severe abdominal pain and a critical condition. Emergency imaging through X-ray confirmed the presence of the foreign object inside her abdomen. The medical team swiftly conducted a laparoscopic procedure to retrieve the item. Anjum Rehman, Chairperson of Lyari General Hospital, confirmed that the patient is now stable and recovering well.

Laparoscopy involves inserting a tiny camera through small incisions, allowing surgeons to see inside the abdomen on a monitor. This approach reduces the need for large cuts, typically results in quicker recovery, and minimizes complications compared to conventional open surgeries.

In other news, Hyderabad Civil Hospital recently completed the first successful free tummy tuck operation for a woman, as reported by ARY News on Monday.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Kashan Sheikh and Dr. Roshan Chandio on a 55-year-old woman from Matiari. During the operation, approximately 8 kilograms of excess fat was removed, significantly improving her mobility. Dr. Roshan explained that the procedure helped alleviate her severe difficulty in walking caused by excess weight. The operation lasted over two hours, and the patient is now safe. He added that such advanced cosmetic surgeries are typically available only in select private hospitals across Karachi.
