Islamabad: The federal government decided on Sunday to transform the Frontier Constabulary (FC) into a nationwide federal force for expanding its jurisdiction and capabilities across the country.
Sources divulged that the force will be renamed as the Federal Constabulary and will be authorised to operate in all four provinces, as well as in Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources said that to implement the decision, an ordinance will be issued following the federal cabinet’s approval of proposed amendments to the Frontier Constabulary Act, 1915.
Sources privy to the development added that the establishment of the Federal Constabulary is expected to play a key role in enhancing internal security and maintaining law and order nationwide.
Previously, recruitment in the FC was limited to youth from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Under the new structure, recruitment will be open to candidates from across Pakistan.
The restructured force will be commanded by officers from the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) and its offices will be established throughout the country.
