Gul Plaza fire; death toll rises to 74, DNA testing underway to confirm victims’ identities

KARACHI: The tragic fire at Gul Plaza has claimed 74 lives, leaving families in mourning as they gather the remains of their loved ones. With the search operation concluded, the building has now been sealed.

The final body, identified through DNA testing, remains unnamed. Of 80 missing persons reported, DNA samples from 69 families were collected, while 13 families have yet to submit samples. Data on 30 victims was sent to the government for compensation processing.

The fire, which erupted on January 17, devastated the entire plaza. After completing debris clearing, the structure was handed to the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). Future actions, including demolition, will be decided by SBCA.

Investigators recovered three DVRs from the rubble, potentially key to determining the fire’s cause. Found near a mosque by the Urban Search and Rescue team, the devices are under analysis and could reveal crucial details about the incident.

Tanveer Pasta, President of the Gul Plaza Traders Association, denied social media accusations as baseless. He clarified that exits were open during the fire and confirmed electricity was switched off as a precaution to prevent further spread. He emphasized that cutting power reduced risks and helped save lives.
