Gul Plaza tragedy day 3: Death toll climbs to 26, with over 70 still missing

KARACHI: The Gul Plaza tragedy in Karachi has entered its third day, with rescue teams still recovering victims under perilous conditions. Officials report the death toll has reached 26, with 20 bodies identified and medico-legal exams completed for 19.

Seventy-five individuals remain missing, causing anguish for families at the site. Rescue teams continue searching, despite 40% of the building having collapsed and the remainder being unstable. Only after strict safety checks are workers allowed to re-enter.

The process of identifying bodies is slow due to the condition of remains. Police Surgeon Dr. Samia stated that samples from 14 bodies and 48 relatives have been sent to forensic labs to expedite identification. Authorities aim to complete this process today.

To reduce the building’s load, 16 vehicles, including 12 motorcycles and four Suzuki vehicles, have been removed from rooftop parking. The area has been declared a red zone, and citizens are barred from entry as security forces ensure order and smooth operations.

Clearing of the building is set to begin under strict safety measures. Rescue efforts will continue until all missing persons are accounted for.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed sorrow over the loss of lives, offering prayers for the missing and condolences to affected families.
