KARACHI: Madhubala, a female elephant residing at Karachi Safari Park, has experienced a sudden decline in health, with swelling observed in her right hind thigh, which has rendered her unable to walk properly. The park’s management confirmed that the swelling is affecting her mobility and is closely monitoring her condition.
Originally transferred from Karachi Zoo to Safari Park in November 2024, Madhubala was the only elephant at the zoo before her relocation. Recently, she collapsed on Tuesday but was assisted back to her feet with the help of a crane.
Madhubala has a history of foot infections and abscesses, and her recent health issues are thought to be linked to these past problems. Additionally, she has been dealing with calcium deficiency, although officials noted her calcium levels have shown some improvement.
Veterinary tests have been conducted to better understand her condition. An expert veterinarian indicated that Madhubala is receiving antibiotics and other medications to treat a potential bacterial infection. The vet emphasized that further examinations are necessary to pinpoint the exact cause of her current health crisis.
The veterinarian also highlighted that prolonged walking on hard flooring can contribute significantly to foot and leg ailments in elephants.
In contrast, a spokesperson for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) stated that they are not fully informed about Madhubala’s present health status, indicating a lack of recent updates from the management.
Madhubala was transferred to Safari Park alongside elephants Sonia and Malika. Sadly, Sonia passed away approximately a month after the move, raising concerns about the overall health and well-being of the elephants at the facility.
