Heavy rainfall in Islamabad, Rawalpindi raise potential flood, overflowing streams

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a flood alert for Nullah Lai due to rising water levels. Rainfall was heaviest in Islamabad’s Sector H-8, where 95mm was recorded. Sector G-11 also saw continuous downpours. Authorities have urged residents near water channels to stay alert and take safety precautions.

The PMD has cautioned that Nullah Lai’s water levels could escalate rapidly, urging nearby residents to stay alert and steer clear of low-lying zones. Emergency response teams are on standby, prepared for possible evacuations or rescue operations. Although no significant flooding has been reported yet, the threat remains significant, and the public is recommended to monitor weather updates regularly.

This heavy rain follows earlier warnings from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which predicted heavy rainfall in Islamabad and parts of Punjab from September 1 to 3. The NDMA also highlighted the risk of flooding and landslides in hilly areas. Local authorities have been instructed to prepare for emergencies, with districts such as Murree, Jhelum, Attock, and Gujranwala identified as particularly vulnerable due to past flood events.

Infrastructure pressures, including drainage system overloads and potential power outages, are concerns if the rain persists. Efforts are underway to clear blocked roads and maintain traffic flow. Overall, the situation remains critical across the region, with PMD and NDMA closely monitoring developments. Citizens are advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall, avoid unnecessary travel, and report any emergencies promptly. Preparedness and caution are essential to minimize harm and protect property amid ongoing weather challenges.
