Mascat: Heavy rainfall caused flash flooding in Oman on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, killing at least 17 people as rescuers searched for survivors, authorities said Monday. In one incident, a group of school children and a driver died when their vehicle was overtaken, authorities said.
More heavy rain is expected in Dubai and other parts of the Arabian Peninsula.
Authorities reported the death toll in Oman’s North Al Sharqiyah province, the worst-hit area. The police and military are helping evacuate flooded areas.
Heavy rain often leads to flash floods in Oman, especially in dry riverbeds known as “wadi,” where people and vehicles can be washed away.
In Dubai, heavy rain is expected with thunder, lightning, and possibly hail. Winds could reach up to 70 kph (43 mph). Government schools will have online classes on Tuesday and Wednesday.
