KARACHI: As Karachiites woke up to the news of rain post-midnight today, the masses experienced trouble while travelling to their offices, schools in the morning as water-logged roads greatly obstructed traffic.
The entire path leading to Gulberg Chowrangi from Water Pump remained inundated while the part of Gujjar Nullah spilt over onto the road near Landi Kotal in the central district.
Parts of M. A. Jinnah road have remained under the influence of rainwater as well and have posed challenge to the traffic flow.
Dewatering has been reportedly underway of the roads near Safari Park and NIPA as the swamped road imperil traffic flow.
Rain with strong winds lashed parts of Karachi in the early hours today.
Heavy downpour was reported in the city’s area including Malir, Model Colony, Airport, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Saddar, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Site,
Nazimabad, Federal B Area, North Karachi, New Karachi and other areas.
The thundershower came at around 1:30 am and battered windows. It took only a few minutes before water began to pool on roads and streets.
Some parts of the city were plunged into darkness as K-Electric feeders tripped and the power went out as soon after the rain began. However, many people were amused the K-Electric decided not to pull the plug for their neighbourhoods even during the rains.
Over 200 of K-Electric’s total 1,900 feeders went out soon after the rain began, according to SAMAA TV.
The municipal staff was out on roads to clear water in some areas. A Twitter handle purportedly shared DMC East’s video showing the staff at a heavily flooded road in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
The Met Office said that the highest rainfall on Thursday was recorded in Surjani Town. It was 58mm. The lowest was recorded at the old Airport at 1.5mm, Orangi Town – 37mm, Nazimabad – 32mm, PAF Masroor Base – 17mm,Kemari – 15mm, University Road – 7.8mm, Gulshan-e-Hadeed – 4mm, Jinnah Terminal – 2.8mm,PAF Faisal Base – 2.0mm
