HEC to launch blockchain-based digital degree attestation system

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is preparing to launch a new digital attestation platform powered by blockchain technology, allowing students to verify their degrees online without needing to visit offices or submit physical paperwork, according to reports from The News.

Officials revealed that the HEC has partnered with CMPak and its joint venture Wibbow Technologies to develop this innovative platform. The initiative aims to streamline the attestation process by enabling applicants to submit requests and monitor their application status electronically.

The new system is expected to eliminate the need for in-person visits, speed up processing times, and facilitate easier sharing of verified credentials—particularly benefiting students living outside major cities or applying from abroad. The rollout is targeted for completion by June 30.

Earlier this year, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Government Assurances urged the HEC to reduce the time taken for degree attestations. The committee criticized the existing process as cumbersome and financially burdensome for students.

During discussions on the progress report related to the Minister of Education’s assurances, the committee emphasized the importance of minimizing the turnaround time for degree attestations. In response, the HEC chairman assured members that a secure, comprehensive blockchain system is being established to address these concerns.

He further stated that the project would be launched before June 30, 2026, initially connecting 25 universities and the Foreign Office’s Attestation Directorate. The committee also requested a joint presentation from the HEC and the Foreign Office to review the progress on the degree attestation system.
