WEB DESK: Hong Kong experienced its deadliest fire in over 50 years as the tragic event reached a somber milestone on Friday. Authorities confirmed 128 fatalities and revealed that approximately 200 residents remain unaccounted for.
The blaze erupted at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex, comprising eight 32-storey towers, in the northern Tai Po district on Wednesday afternoon.
Security Chief Chris Tang reported during a press conference that the fire alarms within the complex were not functioning properly at the time of the incident.
Rescue operations have now concluded, with at least 79 individuals injured, including 12 firefighters, according to Tang.
The estate, home to over 4,600 residents, was undergoing renovation and had been encased in bamboo scaffolding and green mesh.
Police have arrested three officials from a construction company on manslaughter charges. The suspects allegedly utilized unsafe materials, such as flammable foam boards that obstructed windows, contributing to the disaster.
