I hope this agreement paves the way for improved relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Khawaja Asif.

WEB DESK: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has announced that Pakistan and Afghanistan have reached a ceasefire agreement aimed at curbing terrorism and fostering long-term peace in the region.

The agreement, facilitated through mediation by Qatar and Turkey, designates these two nations as guarantors of the deal.

Speaking with Al Jazeera, Khawaja Asif highlighted the persistent challenge of terrorism along the Pak-Afghan border, emphasizing how recent clashes underscored the urgent need for resolution. He stated that both countries recognize the necessity of ending terrorism to safeguard regional peace.

Asif revealed that the agreement was achieved through collaborative mediation efforts led by Qatar and Turkey. A follow-up meeting to finalize operational frameworks is scheduled to take place in Istanbul next week.

He further noted that both sides have committed to establishing an effective mechanism to address shared concerns and prevent future disputes. The Afghan Defense Minister also acknowledged terrorism as the primary source of tension between the two neighbors, Asif added.

As part of the accord, Afghanistan will regain access to Pakistani ports, a step expected to enhance cross-border trade and connectivity in the region.

On the subject of refugees, Asif clarified that Afghans with valid visas will continue to be allowed to stay in Pakistan, but the repatriation of undocumented immigrants will proceed as planned.

Expressing optimism, Asif concluded by stating his hope that this agreement will pave the way for improved relations between the two countries moving forward.
