Imran Will Not Cast Vote in Senate Polls, Shafqat Confirms

Islamabad (March 03, 2018): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan will not cast his vote in Senate polls that are underway across the country today (Saturday).

While talking to the media outside the National Assembly, PTI MNA Shafqat Mehmood said Imran would not be going to the Parliament to cast his vote as he had other commitments.

On allegations regarding horse-trading, Mehmood said the reports were disappointing. He added is votes are bought and sold then only money will be represented, not the public.

Meanwhile, Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar said that he will become PTI’s first senator from Punjab.

Polling for the Senate elections went under way at 9am across the four provincial assemblies and National Assembly and is expected to conclude without a break at 4pm today.

Candidates are contesting for 52 Senate seats from the provinces, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and the federal capital.

Rangers and Frontier Constabulary personnel have been deployed outside the provincial assemblies and Parliament.

The four provincial assemblies vote for their representatives, whereas the FATA senators are elected by the MNAs from the tribal areas and the Islamabad senators by the National Assembly members.

It is to be mentioned here that ten candidates from Punjab province are contesting for seven seats in the Senate. Asif Kimani, Shaheen Khalid Butt, Zubair Gul, Haroon Akhtar, Rana Maqbool, Mussadiq Malik and Rana Mehmoodul Hassan are PML-N candidates from Punjab while Shehzad Ali from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Chaudhry Sarwar of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Kamil Ali Agha of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q) are taking part from Punjab.Hafiz Abdul Karim and finance minister Ishaq Dar, belonging to PML-N, are contesting the polls for technocrat seats. Also contesting for technocrat seats are PTI’s Malik Asif Javed and PPP’s Nawazish Ali Khan.

Sadia Abbasi of PML-N, Hina Rabbani Khar, Andaleeb Abbasi and Nuzhat Sadiq are contesting Senate elections 2018 from Punjab for women’s seats.

Kamran Michael and Victor are contending for one minority’s seat in Senate from Punjab.

As many as 24 candidates are contesting polls for four Senate seats reserved for Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). For 12 seats for Sindh, as many as 33 candidates are taking part.

26 candidates are contesting the elections for 11 seats of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province and 23 candidates for 11 seats of Balochistan province.Senate elections are being contested by on 52 seats by 131 candidates from the provinces, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Islamabad.

A total of 20 candidates are contesting 12 seats from Punjab, 33 on 12 seats from Sindh, 26 on 11 seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 25 on 11 seats from Balochistan, 24 on four seats from FATA and five on two seats from Islamabad.

The four provincial assemblies vote for their representatives, whereas the FATA senators are elected by the MNAs from the tribal areas and the Islamabad senators by the National Assembly members.
