RAWALPINDI: PTI leader and founder Imran Khan’s health status has been confirmed as stable by Barrister Salman Safdar following a visit to the former prime minister at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.
The lawyer made these remarks after spending three hours with Imran Khan at the prison. The visit came after the Supreme Court granted Safdar permission to meet the imprisoned leader, acknowledging him as a “friend of the court.”
The court emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough assessment of Imran Khan’s living conditions, stating that Barrister Safdar should be given full access to his cell to prepare a detailed report. “A report on his welfare should be submitted to the court,” the bench said.
Speaking to reporters outside the jail, Safdar confirmed that authorities had provided him with “full access” to meet with Khan. “I will withhold any comment until the Supreme Court receives the report,” he stated.
The Supreme Court has set tomorrow (Wednesday) as the deadline for submitting the report on Imran Khan’s detention conditions. This order follows the court’s rejection of an earlier plea for an “immediate” meeting, which was rejected on the grounds that proper notice had not been issued to the government.
The request for an urgent meeting was filed by senior PTI leader Latif Khosa, weeks after Khan was transferred from Adiala Jail to PIMS for a brief eye procedure. Khan has been in custody since August 2023, facing multiple cases related to corruption and terrorism charges, following his ousting from office through a no-confidence motion in April 2022.
Additionally, PTI submitted a memorandum last week to the SC registrar, urging for the immediate visitation rights of Khan to his family, medical staff, lawyers, and friends within the jail. The party accused authorities of violating Khan’s basic rights and alleged that he was undergoing a secretive medical procedure at a hospital in Islamabad without informing his family, breaching jail protocols.
