ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court registrar’s office has accepted a contempt of court petition filed by Dr Uzma Khan, sister of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, after the petition was resubmitted with the objections addressed.
The petition was initially returned by the registrar’s office on Tuesday over procedural objections, including the absence of a list detailing the allegations against the respondents. Following rectification, the petition was refiled and assigned case number 8/2026.
Dr Uzma has also requested an urgent hearing, citing concerns over her brother’s health and well-being. She alleged that the federal authorities failed to comply with the Supreme Court’s direction to transfer Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for medical examination.
According to the petition, the authorities should have approached the competent court for clarification if they had any reservations about implementing the order instead of deviating from it.
She urged the Supreme Court to initiate contempt proceedings against those responsible, issue show-cause notices and summon the relevant officials for personal appearance. She also requested that the case be fixed for hearing during the current week.
The petition, filed on August 22, was submitted on Dr Uzma’s behalf by PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja and lawyer Uzair Bhandari.
Imran Khan Taken to PIMS Instead of Shifa
In its August 18 order, the Supreme Court had directed authorities to shift Imran Khan, who is incarcerated at Adiala Jail, to Shifa International Hospital for medical evaluation.
However, the former prime minister was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said doctors from Shifa International were present during the medical examination.
The development triggered criticism from PTI, which accused the government of disregarding the court’s order. The government, however, maintained that security considerations were behind the decision.
The federal government has separately challenged the August 18 order through a review petition, which was initially returned by the registrar’s office over objections. Islamabad Chief Commissioner subsequently moved a petition seeking an early hearing of the review matter.
Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the decision to take Imran Khan to PIMS was made by the administration and was unrelated to the Punjab government.
He said Khan’s security was the administration’s primary concern and acknowledged that the decision could generate controversy.
“Imran’s security was the priority, which is why the decision was made,” he said.
