In few months to become country providing most cheapest electricity in region: Owais Leghari

Islamabad: The National Assembly ( NA) was informed today (Wednesday) that the government will not purchase electricity after March this year as authorization has been given for the creation of an Independent Electricity Market.

Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari told the House during the Question Hour that the Independent Electricity Market will enable the consumers to purchase electricity from multiple suppliers.

The Minister said that in a few months time will provide the most cheapest electricity in the region adding till April we may include in the countries providing the cheap electricity.

He apprised that Prime Minister on a daily basis reviewing matter of decreasing the electricity prices. We will fight till last for the rights of the consumers.

The Minister said contracts have been reviewed with over twenty-eight IPPs, benefiting the national exchequer to the tune of 1457 billion rupees.

He said since June last year the per unit electricity tariff for industries has been reduced by eleven rupees and for the rest of the country by four rupees.

The Minister for Energy further shared that the electricity tariff for the EV charging stations has been reduced to thirty-nine rupees from seventy-one rupees per unit.

Awais Ahmed Leghari said special units have been established to improve recoveries and check power pilferage.

He said the result of this initiative has been positive and is being expanded. He said that there is no proposal to revisit the slab system. However, the government is working on a number of initiatives to reduce the burden on the common man.

Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said advanced metering infrastructure has been introduced in all Discos and is being implemented in phases to ensure accurate billing and increased customers’ satisfaction.
He informed the House that the tariff was determined by NEPRA being the regulator and DISCOs implement the same in letter and spirit.

He further said conditions for the privatization of power distribution companies will be met by the end of this month.

He informed the NA that no Power Distribution Company (DISCO) was handed over to Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), however special intelligence units comprising provincial officials, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and others were helping to reduce the losses and electricity theft in the power sector.
