Islamabad: Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) has said that the prices of per 40 kg (mon) sugarcane have increased from Rs 270 to 300 after which it is feared that the sugar prices will likely go up above Rs 100.
The PSMA has written a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan which stated that as per the government orders the crushing season started 15 to 20 days before (November 30), due to which the recovery from the sugarcane remained very low and the country deprived of 3 lakh ton sugar.
The letter reads that the government had ensured the association the middlemen will not be allowed to intervene in the sale and purchase of sugar and Rs 200 per 40 Kg price of sugar cane will be ensured so that people could get sugar at a price of Rs 75.
The PSMA has complained that despite the government assurance all the cane commissioners completely failed to end the
role of middlemen owing to this the sugarcane per 40 kg has reached between Rs 270 to 300. Resultantly, it is feared that the sugar prices can go up to above Rs 100.
The PSMA has requested the government to ensure the availability of sugarcane at government fixed prices so that the prices of sugar be decreased.
