India hosting two-day G-20 summit in New Delhi

New Delhi: India is hosting a two day G20 Summit in New Delhi from today.

The event’s theme is ‘One Earth. One Family. One Future’, under which G20 leaders will discuss various topics related to development, climate, trade and investments.

In order to make G20 more representative, permanent membership to the African Union has been granted in the group on the sidelines of the G20 summit being held in India.

The G20 nations remained deeply divided over several issues including Russia-Ukraine war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are skipping the September 9-10 summit in the capital New Delhi.

The G20 consists of 19 countries and the European Union, making up about 85 per cent of global GDP and two-thirds of the world’s population.

Joe Biden

The US President Joe Biden has arrived India accompanied by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, on her fourth visit to India in 10 months

Lavrov, not Putin

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will head the Russian delegation after Putin said he would not attend.

Lavrov will head the Russian delegation as he did at the BRICS summit in South Africa last month.

Li Qiang, not Xi

Premier Li Qiang will lead China’s delegation, Beijing said Monday, all but confirming that Xi will snub the meeting.

The summit has taken on additional importance this year as many countries wrestle with high inflation and economic turbulence linked to a slowing recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
