India lodges strong protest with China over detention of Indian woman

WEB DESK: India has expressed strong opposition to China over the reported detention of an Indian citizen at Shanghai Airport.

According to Indian media, a UK-based woman with an Indian passport was stopped by Chinese officials during a layover in Shanghai on November 21. She was informed that her Indian passport was invalid due to her birthplace being Arunachal Pradesh, a state in eastern India.

The individual, identified as Prema Wangjom Thongdok, shared that she was prevented from boarding her connecting flight to Japan and detained for 18 hours, as per media reports. Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that Chinese authorities have yet to provide an explanation for their actions, which allegedly breach several international air travel conventions.

In response, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said the checks conducted at the airport adhered to applicable laws and regulations. Meanwhile, Jaiswal emphasized that India has raised the matter “very strongly” with China.
