WEB DESK: India is set to begin domestic production of fighter jet engines in partnership with a French company.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh revealed during a defence summit in New Delhi on Friday.
“We are taking concrete steps to produce aircraft engines within the country,” Singh stated. “This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with a French defence firm.”
Although the minister did not specifically identify the French partner, several Indian media outlets have indicated that the company involved is likely Safran — a key player in India’s defence and aerospace sectors for years.
This engine project aligns with India’s broader push toward defence self-reliance. Earlier this year, Singh approved the development of a prototype for the country’s fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), describing it as a major stride towards reducing reliance on foreign military technology.
As part of this self-reliance drive, the Indian government has committed to awarding at least $100 billion in defence manufacturing contracts to domestic firms by 2033.
