Indian court temporarily halts exit order against actor Imran Khan

WEB DESK: A court in India has temporarily stayed an order requiring Bollywood actor Imran Khan to leave the country, allowing him to remain until November 2.

The 43-year-old US citizen had been directed by the government to depart by October 28 over allegations that he took part in a protest in Mumbai. He challenged the order in the Bombay High Court, arguing there was no evidence that he had joined the demonstration or mobilised participants.

The court deferred the hearing until November 2 due to technical issues and ordered that the government’s decision remain suspended in the meantime.

Khan’s partner, Lekha Washington, said the pair had gone to the area with his mother and a cousin to inquire about a friend who had been detained by police. Khan later told reporters they had no demands and were not affiliated with any group.

The protest called for the resignation of India’s chief election commissioner over allegations of changes to voter lists. Khan’s case remains before the court.
