Indian External Affairs Secretary affirms U.S. played no role in Pakistan-India ceasefire

NEW DELHI: Indian External Affairs Secretary Venkram Misri denies US Mediation claims amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

In response to recent assertions by US President Donald Trump claiming he mediated peace between India and Pakistan and played a role in preventing a nuclear conflict, Indian Secretary of External Affairs Venkram Misri clarified that there was no third-party mediation involved.

During a parliamentary committee briefing, Misri emphasized that, India’s stance remains firm: “There was no third-party mediation in this matter,” he stated, addressing questions about Trump’s claims of having ‘resolved’ the Kashmir issue through diplomatic efforts.

The briefing also included a refusal to comment on the incident involving Indian aircraft being shot down.

The increasing tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals have threatened regional peace, prompting world leaders to appeal for restraint. Ultimately, on May 10, Donald Trump announced on his social media account that Pakistan and India had immediately agreed to a ceasefire.

Following this, Trump has made several statements suggesting that he used trade as a weapon to facilitate the ceasefire between the two traditional rivals.

Last Friday, in an interview with US news channel Fox News, Trump said that Pakistan and India were very close to nuclear war.

Using the phrase ‘undesirable,’ Trump indicated that a nuclear war was imminent, describing it as ‘the worst thing that could happen.’ He said, “They were very close, hatred was very high. And then I said, we can talk about trade, and we will do a lot of trade.”

President Trump further stated, “I am using trade to balance the scales, to establish peace.”

However, India has consistently denied Trump’s claims.
