Indian HAL Tejas Fighter Jet Crashes At Dubai Airshow

DUBAI: An Indian Air Force Tejas fighter jet participating in a demonstration at the Dubai Air Show crashed on Friday afternoon, causing concern as thick black smoke rose near the runway. According to reports, the pilot was unable to eject in time and is believed to have lost his life.

Authorities are still evaluating the situation, preliminary reports indicate that the Indian-made HAL Tejas went down at approximately 2:10 PM local time while performing an aerobatic maneuver in front of thousands of spectators.

Videos circulating online capture the aircraft’s sharp descent before impact, followed by a massive column of black smoke billowing from the crash site.

Families, children, and aviation enthusiasts who had gathered for the show were seen fleeing for safety as emergency sirens echoed across Al Maktoum International Airport, the venue for the event.

Eyewitnesses described shocking scenes as the area around the crash site was engulfed in smoke. Security personnel promptly evacuated nearby exhibition zones while emergency responders worked to contain the fire and secure the location.

Organizers of the Dubai Air Show have not provided additional updates but confirmed that rescue efforts are ongoing.

This incident marks only the second crash involving a Tejas fighter jet since its induction. The first occurred in 2024 near Jaisalmer, making Friday’s crash a rare challenge for India’s indigenous fighter program.

Indian defense officials and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are yet to release formal statements regarding the event. More information is expected after investigators conclude their initial assessment of the crash site.

The Dubai Air Show—one of the largest aerospace exhibitions globally—has adjusted its schedule to continue operations as emergency crews address the situation.
