DHAKA: A Dhaka court has authorised a four-day police remand of Indian national Rabiul Islam for questioning over suspected links with India’s intelligence agency, RAW, and alleged involvement in recent sabotage incidents in Bangladesh.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order on Friday after the Dhaka Detective Branch (DB) sought custody for further interrogation.
According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police prosecution division, Rabiul was taken into custody at around 3am on Tuesday from Sector 11 in Uttara, Dhaka. He was later formally arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The DB told the court that Rabiul had entered Bangladesh on September 14 and that his movements had raised suspicion among investigators.
During questioning, he reportedly identified himself as an Indian citizen and presented an Indian passport, driving licence and national identity card. Police, however, found discrepancies in the dates of birth mentioned on the documents, with the details on his driving licence and national identity card differing from those on his passport.
Investigators also said Rabiul had travelled to Bangladesh several times in the past but could not give clear reasons for those visits.
The remand application stated that he provided contradictory information during questioning, prompting investigators to seek further custody to verify his statements and establish the purpose of his presence in Bangladesh.
The DB is now questioning Rabiul over the discrepancies in his documents and statements as part of its investigation into the allegations against him.
