Indian Navy: A growing concern for humanity and marine life

WEB DESK: India’s dependence on underdeveloped military technology has resulted in significant defense failures and environmental hazards. Over the past decade, at least 15 major naval accidents have been reported.

India’s first nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arihant, was rendered inoperative for 10 months due to an accidental hatch opening, raising serious environmental and operational concerns. Additionally, its construction faced a three-year delay, casting doubt on India’s capability to develop advanced military platforms efficiently.

Corruption within the Indian Navy’s procurement process further undermines its operational readiness. Notable examples include the 2006 arms procurement kickbacks, the controversial 2013 torpedo deal, and procurement irregularities involving local weapon systems in 2019. Such issues compromise the quality and reliability of critical naval equipment.

The use of substandard materials in India’s nuclear technology has caused environmental damage, heightening the risk of underwater nuclear accidents. Mishandling of radioactive materials poses severe threats to South Asian naval personnel and marine ecosystems, with long-lasting ecological consequences.

Despite 140 million people living below the poverty line, India allocates billions to its nuclear submarine program, sparking ethical concerns about prioritizing military expansion over pressing social and environmental needs.

To address these risks, South Asian nations must establish a cooperative framework emphasizing maritime safety, environmental conservation, and conflict resolution. This framework should include regular audits, transparency measures, and strict accountability systems.

Collaboration with international regulatory bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for nuclear safety oversight is imperative. Strengthening such partnerships would enhance regional security, safeguard marine life, and reduce environmental hazards.
