Indian PM tenders resignation from his post

New Delhi: Indian Premier Narendra Modi on Wednesday tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.

The Union Cabinet submitted their resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.

The President accepted the resignation and requested the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office till the new Government is formed, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a statement.

Modi is likely to take oath for a third consecutive term on Saturday, June 8, after the Lok Sabha elections gave the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) a clear majority.

The swearing-in ceremony of the Union Cabinet is also likely to take place the same day.

The Union Cabinet met at the Prime Minister’s residence on Wednesday morning, a day after the declaration of the election results. It has recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, sources said.

The meeting began at 11.30 am and was followed by a meeting of the council of ministers, the sources added. This was the last meeting of Modi 2.0’s cabinet and council of ministers. The Cabinet’s recommendation on the dissolution of the current Lok Sabha paves way for the 18th Lok Sabha. The term of the current 17th Lok Sabha ends on June 16.

The Cabinet meeting also took stock of the Lok Sabha election results and also discussed matters related to the formation of the next government, according to the sources.

The BJP is set to form the government with the help of its allies, as it stopped short of a majority, claiming 240 seats. The NDA, meanwhile, got 293 seats in the 543-member House. The principal opposition party Congress bagged 99 seats, and the INDIA bloc together won 233 seats.
