India Retain History Against Pakistan In WC As Won By 89 Runs

MANCHESTER:  India won by 89 runs by the Duckworth–Lewis method in a rain-affected match against Pakistan to extend their unbeaten World Cup record against Pakistan on Sunday.

Pakistan, who had been 117 for one, lost four wickets for 12 runs in 18 balls at Old Trafford to dent their bid to reach a target of 337.

Hardik Pandya and Vijay Shankar also took two wickets each. After 35 overs, Pakistan were struggling at 166 for six.

India paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar limped off four balls into the fifth over with a hamstring injury that a team spokesman said had ruled him out of the rest of the match.

But World Cup debutant Vijay Shankar brought on to complete the over, struck the first ball when he had Imam-ul-Haq lbw for seven to leave Pakistan 13 for one.

Fakhar Zaman (62) and Babar Azam (48) repaired the damage, but both fell in quick succession to Yadav after they had just started to up the tempo.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya then took two wickets in two balls, Mohammad Hafeez caught at deep square leg before Shoaib Malik played on for his second successive duck — a wicket greeted with huge roars by the massed ranks of India fans in a capacity crowd.

Imad Wasim survived the hat-trick ball at the start of paceman Pandya´s next over.

Earlier, Kohli became the quickest player to 11,000 one-day international runs, getting there in 222nd innings as compared to compatriot Sachin Tendulkar´s previous record of 276 innings.

India had opened the game in an aggressive style after it was invited to bat first by Pakistan’s captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. India have set a total of 336 runs on the loss of five wickets.

India’s Rohit Sharma delivered an impeccable performance by scoring huge innings of 144 runs.

Pakistan’s Muhammad Amir sent three players of opponent team to pavilion while Wahab Riaz and Hassan Ali clinched 1 wicket each.
