Indonesia: Cargo plane carrying 4 goes missing

A cargo plane has gone missing in a remote mountainous area of Indonesian easternmost province of Papua province. According to foreign news agency four people are aboard the missing Turbo Caribou PK-SWW aircraft.

According to details the plane that took off from the town of Timika at 10:57 pm local time yesterday for the remote Ilaga area but made no contact after an hour. The plane was scheduled to land at 3:22 a.m. Monday.

Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency chief, Henry Bambang Soelistyo has said that a rescue team was sent to search for the plane which was carrying two pilots and two passengers plus the cargo that included construction materials. The rescue works are being impeded by fog, bad weather and dense jungle terrain, he added.

Papua, the second biggest of Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands which is Papua is covered with impenetrable jungles and mountains, depends heavily on air transportation. Some of the many planes that have crashed in Papua have never been found.
