Inflation surges with a rise in prices of 18 essential items

KARACHI: Over the past week, the cost of 18 essential commodities, such as chicken, pulses, tomatoes, domestic LPG cylinders, and bananas, saw a rise, as revealed in the weekly inflation report by the Bureau of Statistics.

The report highlighted that the annual inflation rate experienced a weekly increase of 4.52 percent.

Amongst the notable price hikes, tomatoes surged by Rs 6.87 per kilogram, while domestic LPG cylinders saw an increment of Rs 55.29. Chicken prices climbed by over Rs 11 per kilogram, and bananas became pricier by Rs 4.32 per dozen. Dal mash observed a rise of Rs 6.41 per kilogram, while gram dal increased by Rs 3.29 per kilogram.

Other items registering price increases included firewood, vegetable ghee, cigarettes, and garlic.

On the other hand, the report indicated that prices for nine items declined during the week. Potatoes dropped by Rs 3.27 per kilogram, onions decreased by more than Rs 4 per kilogram, and a 20-kilogram bag of flour became cheaper by Rs 29.

Additionally, salt, jaggery, sugar, and certain lentils also recorded a reduction in prices.

Meanwhile, the statistics agency stated that the prices of 24 commodities, including bread, fresh milk, and curd, remained stable throughout the week.

The report also mentioned a depreciation in the value of the rupee, which fell by Rs 0.17 during this period.
