Injured Supreme Court blast victim dies in hospital

ISLAMABAD: A gas leak explosion that occurred on Tuesday in the basement of the Supreme Court building has resulted in its first fatality.

Nineteen-year-old Asad Muneeb, who suffered burns covering 80% of his body during the blast, passed away on Wednesday at the Burn Centre of PIMS Hospital.

Hospital representatives reported that Asad had been receiving treatment since the explosion, but his condition remained critical due to the severity of his injuries.

The unfortunate incident happened during maintenance work on an air conditioning compressor, when an AC gas plant exploded in the Supreme Court building’s basement.

CCTV footage captured the moment of the blast, showing a sudden explosion followed by dense smoke billowing through the area. At least thirteen people, including maintenance staff and nearby workers, were injured in the incident.

Officials have attributed the explosion to a gas leak in the AC system, with an investigation underway to uncover any safety violations and assess if standard maintenance procedures were adhered to.

Rescue teams and fire officials swiftly responded to the scene, evacuating the premises and rushing the injured to PIMS Hospital for emergency care.
